How to Generate SRT Subtitles Automatically from a Video
You do not have to type subtitles by hand. Transcribe the audio, correct the lines, and export a standard SRT file.
What you need
A video or audio file (MP4, MOV, WebM, MP3 or WAV) with clear speech. The clearer the audio, the fewer corrections you will make.
Steps
- Open the SRT file generator and upload your file.
- Choose Roman Urdu or English for the text.
- Wait for the transcript. Each line has a start and end time.
- Read the lines and fix names, numbers and slang.
- Press Download SRT.
Check the file before you upload it
- Open it in a plain text editor. It should show numbered cues with times like
00:00:02,560 --> 00:00:05,780. - Make sure it is saved as UTF-8.
- Check that no cue overlaps the next one.
Where to upload an SRT file
YouTube Studio lets you upload a subtitle file for a video. Facebook also accepts SRT files on video uploads. Video editors can import SRT as a subtitle track. Menus change over time, so look for "Subtitles" or "Captions" in the video settings. If your player needs WebVTT, use the VTT subtitle generator; the differences are covered in SRT vs VTT.
When to burn captions into the video instead
Reels and TikTok do not use SRT files in the same way. For those, make a captioned video so the text is part of the picture. See animated captions for Reels.
